Final expense insurance for Christian seniors

A small whole life policy that pays for your funeral and final bills, so the cost never falls on your children or your church.

The short answer. Final expense insurance is a small whole life policy, usually $2,000 to $50,000, for people roughly 45 to 85. It lasts for life, the premium never goes up, and it pays your beneficiary quickly so they can cover the funeral. If you have serious health problems, guaranteed acceptance coverage is available, with a two-year waiting period before the full benefit.

Why Christian seniors buy final expense coverage

Most families never talk about the cost of a funeral until they are planning one. The National Funeral Directors Association found the median cost of a funeral with viewing and burial was $8,300 in 2023, or $9,995 with a burial vault, and that is before a cemetery plot or headstone. A funeral with cremation had a median of $6,280.

When there is no policy, that bill lands on grown children, and churches are often asked to help through their benevolence fund. Many believers would rather leave that fund for families who have no other help. A final expense policy settles the matter ahead of time.

It also fits the people who most often ask for it. Pew Research Center's 2023 to 2024 study found that the median age of American Christians has risen to 54, and 29% are 65 or older.

How final expense insurance works

  • It is whole life. Coverage lasts as long as you pay the premium, no matter how long you live.
  • The premium is level. It is set when you buy and does not rise with age.
  • The amount is modest. Usually enough for a funeral, burial or cremation, and final bills.
  • Applying is simple. Most policies ask health questions instead of requiring a medical exam. Your answers decide which plan you qualify for.
  • The money goes to your beneficiary. They can use it for the funeral or anything else. You can name a child, a spouse, your church, or more than one.

The three kinds of final expense policy

TypeWho it fitsIf you die in the first two years
Level benefitPeople in fair to good health who answer the health questions favorablyThe full benefit is paid from day one
Graded benefitPeople with some health conditionsNatural death usually returns premiums paid plus a percentage, often 10%. Accidental death pays in full.
Guaranteed acceptancePeople with serious health problems, with no health questionsNatural death usually returns premiums paid plus 10% to 20%. Accidental death pays in full.

Because the right plan depends on your health answers, it pays to apply with the insurer most lenient for your conditions. Insurers treat diabetes, heart history, COPD and other conditions very differently, which is why we compare several.

Final expense or a preneed funeral plan?

A preneed plan is bought through a funeral home and pays that home for the services you choose. A final expense policy pays your family, who can use it at any funeral home and for any bill. Many families prefer the flexibility of final expense, especially if they might move closer to children later in life.

Naming your church as a beneficiary

Some believers buy a final expense policy large enough to cover the funeral and leave a gift to their church, and name both their family and the church as beneficiaries. Others buy a second small policy just for the church. Your agent can set up the beneficiaries any way you like.

What to watch out for

  • The waiting period. Graded and guaranteed acceptance policies do not pay the full benefit for natural death in the first two years. If you can qualify for a level benefit policy, it is usually the better choice.
  • Buying too little. Funeral costs rise over time. Many families choose a little more than today's cost.
  • Policies that end. Some low-cost senior coverage is term insurance that ends at a set age. Final expense whole life does not.
  • Pressure. A good agent will never rush you. You can take your time, talk with your family and decide later.

Questions people ask

Can I get final expense insurance with health problems?

Usually, yes. Many people with health conditions qualify for a level or graded policy. If not, guaranteed acceptance whole life is available to most people from about 50 to 80 with no health questions, with a two-year waiting period for natural death.

How much final expense insurance do I need?

Enough for the funeral you want, plus any final bills. With funeral medians around $8,300 for a burial and $6,280 for cremation in 2023, many people choose $10,000 to $20,000.

Is there a medical exam?

Usually not. Most final expense policies ask health questions instead, and guaranteed acceptance policies ask none.

Does the price go up as I get older?

No. The premium on a final expense whole life policy is set when you buy it and stays level for life.
