The short answer. Thrivent is the largest insurer built for Christians, open to any Christian or the spouse of one. Knights of Columbus serves Catholic men and their families. GuideStone covers people employed by Southern Baptist affiliated churches and ministries. If you do not fit those rules, or you want to compare prices, fraternal societies with no faith test and independent agencies like ours can quote several insurers at once.

Thrivent
Thrivent began as a Lutheran fraternal and now serves Christians of every denomination. Its membership page says it plainly. "If you are a Christian, or the spouse of a Christian, you are eligible to become a member by completing our application." It reports more than 2.4 million clients and about 3,300 financial professionals, and it holds an A++ rating from AM Best and AA+ from S&P.
Thrivent is a strong choice for a Christian household that likes the idea of buying from a faith-based organization and is happy to work with one of its advisors. Its weak spots are the ones every captive insurer shares. You can only buy Thrivent policies from Thrivent, and its prices for permanent coverage are not published online. Read our full Thrivent review.
Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal order with over $124 billion of life insurance in force. Membership is open to practical Catholic men 18 and older, and the insurance is for members, their wives and their dependent children. A widow can still buy for up to a year after her husband's death.
For a Catholic family already connected to a parish council, it is an obvious place to start. Women who are not married to a Knight and non-Catholic Christians cannot buy. Read our full Knights of Columbus review.
GuideStone
GuideStone is the benefits organization for churches and ministries that share bonds with the Southern Baptist Convention. Its life insurance is group term coverage underwritten by Unum, for paid employees scheduled at least 20 hours a week. If you leave that job, you have 31 days to port the coverage or convert it to an individual policy.
GuideStone does not sell life insurance to church members who are not on a church payroll. Read our full GuideStone review.
Fraternal societies with no faith test
A fraternal benefit society is a member-owned insurer that returns part of its earnings to members through benefits and community programs. Thrivent and the Knights of Columbus are fraternals. So are Foresters Financial and Royal Neighbors of America, and neither asks about your faith.
- Foresters Financial makes you a member when you buy an eligible policy. Its member benefits include competitive scholarships, orphan scholarships and monthly orphan benefits, community grants and free will preparation. Benefits are not part of the insurance contract and can change.
- Royal Neighbors of America makes anyone with a product a Beneficial Member at no cost. Its Ensured Legacy final expense coverage runs from $5,000 to $40,000.
For a Christian who wants the fraternal model but is not eligible for Thrivent or the Knights, these are honest alternatives. Christian Protection agents quote both.
Other faith-based options
Several smaller faith-based insurers and benefit plans serve particular churches or regions. Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Financial Life and Catholic Life Insurance serve Catholic families, mostly through local agents. Everence serves Anabaptist and Mennonite communities. Most denominations also have a benefits board, such as Wespath for United Methodist clergy and Portico for ELCA employers, that offers group life to church staff. We will review these in the coming weeks.
Do Christians get special rates?
No. Every insurer prices life insurance by age, health, tobacco use, the amount and the type of policy. A faith-based insurer may give part of its earnings to charity or offer member benefits, but the price of your policy is set the same way as anywhere else. Be wary of anyone who promises Christian rates.
How we compared these insurers
We checked each insurer's eligibility rules on its own website, its products on its own product pages, and its financial strength rating in the rating agency's or insurer's announcement, in November 2026. We do not give stars or scores, because the right insurer depends on whether you can buy from it at all. Read our review method.
Christian Protection does not sell Thrivent, Knights of Columbus or GuideStone policies, and no appointment with them is implied.
Questions people ask
What is the best Christian life insurance company?
For a Christian who wants a faith-based insurer and is happy to work with its advisors, Thrivent is the largest and most widely available. For Catholic men and their families, the Knights of Columbus. For anyone who is not eligible or wants to compare prices, an independent agency can quote several insurers at once.
Can a non-Christian buy Thrivent?
Thrivent's membership is for Christians and spouses of Christians. Someone who is neither is not eligible for membership.
Are fraternal insurers safer than other insurers?
Not by default. Safety comes from an insurer's finances, which rating agencies like AM Best measure. Thrivent holds A++ and Knights of Columbus A+, which are among the highest ratings, but many non-fraternal insurers are also highly rated.
