Our verdict. Thrivent is a financially strong, faith-based insurer and a good fit for a Christian household that wants to buy from a Christian organization and work with one advisor. Anyone who is not a Christian or married to one cannot join, and anyone who wants prices from several insurers at once will need to shop elsewhere too.

Who can buy Thrivent life insurance
Thrivent started as a fraternal society for Lutherans. It now welcomes Christians of every denomination and their spouses. You become a member by completing Thrivent's application, which asks you to affirm your faith. Third-party reviews report that Thrivent does not ask for a letter from a pastor or proof of church attendance.
That leaves out a few groups. A person who is not a Christian and is not married to one is not eligible. Neither is a family member who does not share the faith, such as an adult child who has left the church, unless they are married to a Christian.
What membership includes
Thrivent describes its members as part of a community, not just policyholders. Membership opens access to its charitable and community programs, such as Thrivent Choice, which lets eligible members recommend where Thrivent sends charitable grant dollars, and Thrivent Action Teams, which provide seed money for volunteer projects. These programs are a real reason some families choose Thrivent, and they are not something an independent agency can offer.
What Thrivent sells
- Term life for a set number of years, the lowest cost way to protect young children and a mortgage.
- Whole life, which lasts for life with level premiums and builds cash value. As a fraternal, Thrivent may pay dividends on eligible policies, though dividends are never guaranteed.
- Universal life, permanent coverage with more flexible premiums.
- Variable universal life, whose cash value is invested in market subaccounts and can lose value.
Thrivent does not publish its whole life or universal life prices online. You get those from a Thrivent financial professional.
Where Thrivent falls short
- One insurer only. A Thrivent advisor can only offer Thrivent policies. If another insurer would price your health history better, they cannot show it to you.
- Health problems. Every insurer underwrites differently. Someone with diabetes, heart history or COPD may get a better offer from an insurer that is more lenient on that condition.
- Not fully online. Even term coverage is finished with an advisor.

Should you buy from Thrivent?
If you are eligible, like Thrivent's charitable programs and want one advisor for insurance and investments, Thrivent is a sound choice from a very strong company. If you have health problems, want to compare several prices, or are not eligible, get quotes from other insurers as well. Nothing stops you from comparing a Thrivent offer with ours before you decide.
