Our verdict. GuideStone offers group term life, underwritten by Unum, to paid employees of eligible Southern Baptist affiliated churches and ministries scheduled at least 20 hours a week. It is valuable while you hold that job. Church members who are not employees cannot buy it, and staff who leave have only 31 days to keep it.

Who qualifies for GuideStone life insurance
GuideStone is the benefits organization that serves churches and ministries connected to the Southern Baptist Convention. Its life insurance is employer coverage. You qualify by working for an eligible church, agency or institution as a paid employee scheduled at least 20 hours a week, and you enroll through that employer.
That means GuideStone does not sell life insurance to individuals on their own. A deacon, a Sunday school teacher or a member of the congregation who is not on the church payroll does not qualify, and neither does staff at a non-denominational church outside GuideStone's eligibility rules.
Why group coverage is not always enough
Group life through an employer is a real benefit, and it is often inexpensive. It has three limits worth knowing.
- It is tied to the job. Pastors and church staff change churches more often than most people change employers. When the job ends, so does the group coverage, unless you port or convert it within 31 days.
- Converting can cost more. Converting group coverage to an individual whole life policy avoids new health questions, but the premium is based on your age at that time.
- The amount may be small. Many church plans pay a multiple of salary. For a family that depends on a modest ministry income and a parsonage, that may not replace what the household would lose.
Fewer churches pay for this coverage at all. Lifeway Research's 2026 compensation study found that only 20% of Southern Baptist congregations provide life or accident coverage for their pastor. Read our guide to life insurance for pastors.
Options if you do not qualify, or want more
| Your situation | A good option |
|---|---|
| Church staff who want coverage that stays when you change churches | An individual term policy you own, alongside the group plan |
| Church members who are not employees | Individual term or whole life from an insurer you choose |
| Christians who want a faith-based insurer | Thrivent, if eligible |
| Older members who want funeral costs covered | Final expense whole life |
